Awareness, is one of the main ingredients for mastering the mental and the spiritual, and naturally the physical.
Awareness comes in two forms: a sort of film that is built upon cut scenes, or what could be called as, attending spaces, proceeded by spaces of automated mind and body. And secondly a continuous stream, that is presently being filmed.
The usual state most of humans are is the first one, in a sort of trance were life becomes automated, boring and in general unpleasant. This state is controlled by the subconscious being. You may notice you are aware every now and then, and you won't always be aware, suddenly spacing out, or hurrying up as the mind throws in some memories that remind you of your duties, that you see as something that needs to be carried (literally a lift).
The second state of mind is an uncut movie being filmed right now. This state may be entered transitory while in the first previously described state of awareness, specially through the act of meditation, but obviously also through the consumption of food, through fatigue, like by working out, and during moments of awe, beauty, or love.
The second state just described is of high value to your experience of internal continuous peace, and for the mastering of the self and the world around you. If you want to look through the veil, realize the value of the mind of the child; it's not the childish that adults talk about; rather it is a predisposition to awe, the openness of being able to see the beauty and the value of life manifesting now, all the time, and you are that, you are a part of that and you are aware, conscious that it is happening; you have will and you can act on it, on the mind, you can act on the world, you can describe it with words, can communicate it. See through the eye of the beholder and never blink, don't stop to notice, retain the notion of gaining new insights, never let is lose the magic and beauty, the awe of reality.
