In a ancient weapons history, there are blades that have cool side affects such as extream sharpness to cut a barrel of a gun with a flick of the wrist. This is one i have been confused with the most, any ideas on how this can be done?

yes i'm more attuned with chi now after practicing powerful and graceful movements with the joints. I understand now how and old man or a weaker person could easily deflect attacks and control a situation where it is on need.  
It is said Ip Man himself made his son Ip Chun repeat wu sau (a technique were you move your curled in hand from your heart center forward along your center to your maximum arm length, ending with the finger tips straight forward and then back, bending the elbow and wrists and keeping the fingers straighten as the hand come back to the heart center ), which involves interaction of your wrist, arms and winger joints as well as your shoulders, allegedly until he could feel his chi flow
If you repeat this exercise you surely will as well notice.

Now consider along that the use of old forgery katanas which could pretty much cut trough a human being with a graceful swing.
