I'm a bit skeptical about these sort of manipulations .. perhaps on RAW or lossless images it could be okay but on JPG it's not. I guess one could take any blocky JPG and turn it into what would resemble machinery by applying a series of burn and blur operations.
They usually brush out anomalies:

Sometimes I feel sorry for the mars rovers out there. Cold little machines doing as they are told with no free will and all that. Do you think they ever find anything?
Liquid water on mars? or microrganisms?
